How a gender reveal balloon pop actually works (Sacramento guide)

A gender reveal only gets one take. There’s no re-shoot if the balloon doesn’t pop, or the box doesn’t open, in front of a room full of people holding their phones up. Here’s what’s actually inside a reveal balloon, how the mechanism is rigged so it works the first time, and which format fits the moment you’re planning.
What’s actually inside the balloon
The classic reveal is a large black latex balloon — big enough to fully hide what’s inside, and dark enough that no light gets through before the pop. Inside, it’s loaded with pink or blue tissue confetti (sometimes mixed with small metallic shapes for extra sparkle in photos), then inflated with helium so it floats rather than sits. The confetti color is the only thing that changes between “team pink” and “team blue” — everything else about the build is identical, which is part of what keeps the secret safe until the actual moment.
How the pop is rigged to work the first time
The two failure points are popping it cleanly and popping it on cue. We test the pop mechanism — usually a long pin held by both parents together, so it’s a shared moment rather than one person’s job — before the balloon ever gets filled with confetti, and we build in a slight give so the latex tears open in one motion instead of just deflating slowly. We also stage where the balloon sits relative to where your photographer or phone camera will stand, since confetti falls fast and a shot from too far back misses the moment entirely.
Pop balloon, reveal box, or split garland?
The three formats do different jobs, and plenty of clients combine two of them:
- Reveal pop balloon — one balloon, one pop, one answer. The simplest and most dramatic option, from $150.
- Split garland — a garland built half pink, half blue, framing the space where the reveal happens so the whole scene photographs well, not just the pop itself. From $245.
- The big moment package — pop balloon, split garland, and a backdrop staged together for video, so the whole setup is camera-ready before your guests arrive. From $425.
See the full breakdown on our gender reveal page, or start a quote with your date and venue and we’ll recommend a format based on your space.
Keeping the secret, and keeping it outdoors
If you’re getting the reveal from a sonographer’s sealed envelope, that envelope comes straight to us and nobody on our team looks at it either — we build the balloon blind and don’t find out the answer until you do. If your reveal is outdoors, ask us about timing the inflation close to your event start rather than the night before; heat affects a helium-filled reveal balloon the same way it affects any outdoor installation, so we plan around it rather than let it become a surprise of its own.
When to book
Most reveals come together on a 2–3 week timeline, similar to a standard garland or backdrop — see our full booking guide if your date is part of a bigger party. If your reveal is part of a baby shower or larger celebration, check our full package pricing or contact us directly and we’ll help you plan the whole day around the one moment that matters most.
